Re-Nesting Ourselves
Nestedness is needed now, more than ever.
On the Nested Pathway, we aim to feel always nested: Feeling related, connected, centered, and knowing how to live well with others (human and more than human).
Evolved nest practices keep us feeling nested (Nature connection, healing practices, play, responsiveness, touch, welcome, multiple mentors, soothing perinatal experiences, breastfeeding).
It is ever more challenging to find the space and mindset to relax and be present to our friends and family. But here are things we can do every day to calm ourselves and others.
Here are suggestions for family:
- Stay emotionally connected through nonverbal (hugs) and verbal means (meaningful conversation). (Welcoming)
- Encourage feeling sharing and listen respectfully when feelings are expressed. (Responsiveness)
- Speak up for nurturing according to needs. (Responsiveness)
- Take time for the expression of frustrations experienced during the day. Maybe have a pillow fight (and parents should lose to young children) or a screaming dance fest. (Healing, Play)
- Find a way to play cooperatively with one another each day. (Play)
- Make music together: sing, play instruments (even just “drumming” with found objects) and dance. (Play)
- Find ways to cuddle, hug, hold hands, and other forms of respectful touch. (Touch)
- Find the humor in daily mishaps. (Healing, Play)
- Be silly. (Play)
- Encourage everyone’s cross-age relationships for play and consultation. (Multiple Nurturers)
- Speak of and act inclusively toward ‘all our relations’—the insects, animals, plants. (Nature)
- Partner with one or more non-human entities (animal, plant, waterway, soil) to care for and support them. (Nature)
- Throughout the day, express gratitude to all the lives taken to feed you. (Cosmic nestedness)
- Throughout the day, express gratitude for being alive. (Cosmic nestedness)
Whatever happens, we are part of Earth and Earth is part of us. Just like our multiplicity of ancestors live in us today—from ancient sponges to ancient humans— we will live on in our descendants.
